Sharing Is Caring

  • Menopause brings about a lot of changes (physical, mental, emotional) within a woman. Menopause can be difficult for some women because of the changes they experience like hot flushes coming on at any time of day or night, plus sleep insomnia, the drop in hormones can also cause depression, anxiety and panic attacks.
  • Women can be left feeling unable to cope and with nowhere to turn to, feeling misunderstood in the workplace and at home. They may feel embarrassed to talk about what's really going on for them, the brain fog that stops them from being quite so productive at work; getting tongue-tied over that word that we suddenly can't think of.
  • We also have to face the psychological effect of knowing that our body no longer is able to reproduce; this can leave us with feelings of despair, especially if the menopause has come on early in life. It can be a real moment of reflection on the past, and what we want the future to hold for us
  • The low moods and anxiety can cause us to reflect on issues in our lives that we still have not really addressed, and this can leave women feeling more hopeless.
  • Talk therapy can help patients work through the changes and learn the best ways to treat their body in a new stage.
  • Psychotherapy & Counselling for the Menopause helps you to cope with the body’s emotional responses and adjustments at this most important and potentially life-changing time of life.

What Emotional issues does the Menopause Cause?

  • Depression and mood swings and feeling guilty about it
  • Lower sex drive and a desire to be left alone
  • General feeling of irritability and feeling irrational about being annoyed at nothing
  • Lower than normal motivation or energy to get on with things
  • Gnawing feelings of anxiety and panic
  • A general mental lethargy and feeling of fatigue with life
  • General difficulty in focusing and concentrating on things
  • The constant questions of ‘what is life all about, what is the point of me, now?

Quite apart from feeling unhappy about these changes in yourself, you can see how they are affecting your intimate, family, social and work relationships.

The menopause can cause emotions to surface around relationships and long forgotten trauma. Now can be a good time to address what you are feeling and perhaps been suppressed in the past.

The menopause signals the end of a women’s childbearing age but it doesn’t signal the end of:

  • Being a mother, caring, nurturing and guiding
  • Sex and sexual enjoyment
  • Romance and exploring new relationships
  • Having a fulfilling and purposeful existence
  • Being a valuable member of society

Acharya Charaka explains three types of therapies in Ayurveda.

त्रिविधममौषधमिति - दैवव्यपाश्रयं, युक्तिव्यपाश्रयं, सत्वावजयश्च

Daivavyapasraya Chikitsa: Spiritual therapy
Yuktivyapasraya Chikitsa: Physical therapy
Sattvavajaya Chikitsa: Mental therapy

सत्वावजय: - पुनरहितेभ्योडर्थेभ्यो मनोनिग्रह:

According to Charaka, Sattvavajaya chikitsa is nothing but withdrawal of mind from unwholesome objects.

Sattvavajaya aspsycho therapy, is the mental restraint, or a “mind control” and achieved through “spiritual knowledge, philosophy, fortitude, remembrance and concentration”. Sattvavajaya not only negates the negative thoughts but also endeavors to replace them with positivity.

Counselling treatment which is followed in modern psychiatry treatment very well fit under different methods of Sattvajaya chikitsa.

Sattvavajaya (psychotherapy) has also been given due place in individual. Every person has got his own individuality and to normal variations. This forms his constitution, which distinguishes him from other individuals. This is termed as ‘Prakruti’ of that individual according to doshas.

Every regimen or therapy has to be applied keeping in view the constitution of the concerned person and his suitability (satmya).

Ayurveda is one such area that helps in reaching and curing the root cause of the ailment that a person may be facing.

Sattvavajaya plays a significant role in the maintenance of a harmonious state between these three important factors – Intellect, Memory and Patience, ultimately leading to a happy healthy state of the individual.

Talking with us about how you feel about this time can give you the space and opportunity to consider new possibilities, writing a new chapter.

Like coaching, counselling is rooted in the principle that individuals can help themselves, provided that they receive the right kind of support.
